Abusive Churches pt 7

7. Targeting Young Adults

The seventh characteristic of abusive churches is that they tend to target young adults ages 18-25 who are in the middle class, well educated, idealistic, and often immature Christians. Young adults are the perfect age group to focus on because they are often looking for a cause to give their lives to, and they need love, affirmation, and acceptance. Often these churches will provide this, and the leaders frequently take the role of surrogate parents.

  1. Hey Penny…hope things are going good at your conference. Was curios about this last post. Can you explain a little more what you mean?

  2. Nathan, unfortunately there has been a fatherless generation that is looking for a father figure, even if it is an abusive one. Many abusive churches prey upon the young because they are just looking for affirmation and acceptance. So if they find that or something they perceive as that, they will get plugged in even if the environment is not healthy because at least it is a family of sorts.

We were built for love even if we did not get it growing up we still are wired for it and crave it.

Abusers always prey on those that are vulnerable. People can be vulnerable in many different ways; life experience and youth can be (without healthy parents) a place of vulnerability.

    Do you get it now?

Someone else want to help comment on this topic too?

P.S. This conference is rocking, Nathan. Hillsong is up now.
